Physical-Mechanical Characterization of the Wood of Plathymenia reticulata Benth (Vinhático-do-campo) Species of the Cerrado Biome of the State of Tocantins. The objective of this work was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of Plathymenia reticulata Benth (vinhático-do-campo) wood to indicate its potential use. The wood used in the production of the specimens came from the municipality of Dueré – TO native forest. The basic density, wood retractability, and anisotropy coefficient were obtained from physical tests, and the values of axial compression and static flexion resistance from the mechanical tests. The values obtained showed that the Plathymenia reticulata Benth wood fits the C40 resistance classification for hardwoods, determined by the Brazilian Standard (NBR7190). The average value of the basic density found was 0.64 g cm-3, classified as a medium density wood and the values of tangential, radial and volumetric retractability were 6.11%, 3.06%, 9.39 %, respectively. As for its mechanical characteristics, it presented average values of compressive strength parallel to the fibers, resistance to static flexion, and elastic modulus equal to 58.8MPa, 128.2 MPa, and 12760.0MPa, respectively. The vinhático-do-campo wood can be classified as stable wood and its physical characteristics suggest a normal quality. The species can be applied in light and heavy construction.

A madeira é considerada o combustível mais antigo usado como fonte de energia. No entanto, com a crescente demanda, tornou-se necessário adotar fontes que promovam menores impactos ao meio ambiente. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as propriedades físicas, químicas e energéticas da madeira de Dalbergia cearensis. O estudo foi realizado em uma área de vegetação nativa em Cristino Castro-PI, selecionando três indivíduos da espécie, dos quais foram retirados discos de madeira nas alturas de 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial. A densidade básica foi determinada conforme NBR 11941. O poder calorífico superior foi determinado conforme NBR 8633 e o teor de materiais voláteis, cinzas e de carbono fixo foi determinado de acordo com a NBR 8112. A densidade obtida para a espécie foi de 0,73 g/cm3, o poder calorífico foi de 4.327 kcal kg-1 para madeira e 4.419 kcal kg-1 para casca. O teor de materiais voláteis, cinzas e carbono fixo para a madeira foram 87,9%, 0,3% e 11,9%, respectivamente, e 85,1%, 1,6% e 13,3% para a casca. A espécie apresentou potencial para energia, mas ressalta-se que devido à ótima qualidade da madeira, o destino deverá visar usos mais nobres, como por exemplo serraria.

Background:The conservation and restoration of forest landscapes is an important aspect of sustainable development. In semi-arid regions these practices are difficulted by the harsh climate of these environments, with low precipitation values and prolonged dry seasons. The objective of this study is to identify tree species from the south of the Brazilian state of Piauí that have potential to be used in forest restoration programs.Results: Data from forest inventory and tree characteristics were used to select eight tree species using target species definition, focusing on species with desirable wood properties, abundance in the study region, favorable dendrometric variables, seed availability, ease of seed germination and seedling growth in nursery and field conditions, among others. These species were then evaluated as candidates for restoration using a framework species approach focusing on the following attributes: (i) 70% or higher seedling survival in the field; (ii) seedling height of 45 cm or taller after the first growing season in the field and (iii) 70% or greater nursery seedling survival. Conclusion:The species Combretum glaucocarpum, Cenostigma macrophyllum, and Pityrocarpa moniliformis are suitable to be employed in forest restoration programs in the southern region of Piauí, Brazil. Further studies must be carried out to assess the behavior of these and other potential tree species in long term field conditions and under varying silvicultural regimes, a key aspect for forest restoration.
