The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) and the Pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus) are two canids with very similar food and habitat requirements, which live in sympatry across parts of their distributions. Here we describe the diet and habitat use of both canids in the Pampas biome. The study took place in southern Brazil from December 2012 to December 2013. Diet and habitat use analyses were based on fecal samples, footprints and direct visualizations. Diet overlap was measured using Pianka’s index, while habitat use was measured using presence records from three different environments; forests, edges and open areas. Both canids feed on invertebrates and vertebrates but have preferences for fruits, especially Syagrus romanzoffiana. Pianka’s index showed a high overlap of their diets throughout the year, with the exception of autumn. Regarding habitat use, C. thous preferred to inhabit forested areas while L. gymnocercus was more active in open areas. Our results showed that fruits were the most consumed food item in the Pampas biome. Our findings suggest that habitat use by these two canids is affected by seasonal variation in fruit abundance, but other factors, such as parental care, should be taken into account when explaining how they behave throughout the year.

We describe a new species of the genus Ninia from the Chocó-Magdalena biogeographic province, which was previously reported as a distinct population of N. maculata or as N. atrata from the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The new species is similar to N. atrata, N. celata, N. espinali, N. franciscoi, and N. maculata. It shares the following characteristics with the species mentioned above: 19 dorsal scale rows without reductions; dorsal ground color black or dark brown; white or cream occipital nuchal collar. However, it is easily distinguished from all other congeners because it has a non-regular color pattern in the ventral surfaces of the head and body, subcaudal surface homogeneously black or dark brown, two nasal scales, and one lateral projection ornamented with a large basal hook-shaped spine that is larger than any other spine on the hemipenial body. The presence of a lateral projection on the hemipenial body makes the new species the only member of the genus from South America that shares this feature with its Central American congeners. This feature suggests a closer relationship with this linage. Finally, our results indicate that proper and careful revision of the Ninia atrata species complex will help to understand and clarify the taxonomic composition of the genus.

The White‐footed or Silvery brown tamarin Saguinus leucopus is an endemic Colombian species, threatened by the pet trade and loss of habitat, and for which protection is minimal. Local authorities confiscate about one animal every week, placing them in rescue centres and zoos where there are many husbandry problems. An international conservation programme was established in 2005, currently coordinated by Beauval Zoo in France and locally by Asociación Colombiana de Parques Zoológicos y Acuarios (ACOPAZOA). The programme is a partnership between a consortium of 21 European zoos, ACOPAZOA, local organizations (including nine Colombian zoos), central and regional conservation public authorities, non‐governmental organizations (especially the Wildlife Conservation Society), Colombian universities and researchers. The project combines ex situ in‐country reproduction, education and research, and in situ conservation and education projects, to protect the species. All efforts to date have been a starting point for the conservation of this endemic species, but the final goals are to: (1) create a protected area for the White‐footed tamarins in Colombia, (2) develop two breeding programmes for the species, one in Colombia and the other in Europe, (3) reduce capture of White‐footed tamarins for the pet‐trade market, through education initiatives, and (4) ease the pressure on the forest habitat that is still intact.
