Dense wavelength multiplexing of 1550 nm QKD with strong classical channels in reconfigurable networking environments

Abstract: Abstract. To move beyond dedicated links and networks, quantum communications signals must be integrated into networks carrying classical optical channels at power levels many orders of magnitude higher than the quantum signals themselves. We demonstrate the transmission of a 1550 nm quantum channel with up to two simultaneous 200 GHz spaced classical telecom channels, using reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology for multiplexing and routing quantum and classical signals. The quantum ch… Show more

“…The system model is applied to two types of channel architectures, namely one that uses a dedicated optical fiber for the quantum channel and one that uses dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) to put the quantum channel together with the classical channels into one optical fiber (e.g., see Refs. [34][35][36]). In both cases, we assume that the fibers have an attenuation coefficient of 0.2 dB/km.…”

“…We note that the classical channel was neither linked to the QKD system operation nor used for encrypted communication. More recent works [6,7] investigate different impairment sources on a more general level, including effects that occur when more than one classical channel is present, e.g. FWM.…”

“…The .implementation of ASK format for coherent systems requires the phase 'φs' to remain nearly constant. All external modulators have some insertion losses, a power penalty occurs whenever an external modulator is used; it can be reduced to below 1 dB for monolithically integrated modulators [13].…”
