Dense gas in nearby galaxies

Abstract: Abstract.A multi-line millimeter-wave study of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4945 has been carried out using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The study covers the frequency range from 82 GHz to 354 GHz and includes 80 transitions of 19 molecules. 1.3 mm continuum data of the nuclear source are also presented. An analysis of CO and 1.3 mm continuum fluxes indicates that the conversion factor between H 2 column density and CO J = 1−0 integrated intensity is smaller than in the galactic disk by f… Show more

“…HNCO has also been detected in several external galaxies (Nguyen-Q-Rieu et al 1991;Wang et al 2004;Martín et al 2009), and been suggested as a tracer for nuclear starburst activity (Martín et al , 2009. Two energetically less stable isomers of HNCO have recently been detected in the interstellar medium: cyanic acid (HOCN) tentatively towards Sgr B2 (OH) following its laboratory identification (Brünken et al 2009a), and fulminic acid (HCNO) towards three starless dark clouds and one lowmass star-forming region (Marcelino et al 2009) with abundance ratios relative to HNCO of 0.5% and 1−5%, respectively.…”

“…Their value of the 32 S/ 34 S ratio of 8 ± 2 would be doubled up to a value >16, closer to the value of ∼24 measured in the Galactic disk (Chin et al 1996). The ratio of 32 S/ 34 S ∼ 13.5 toward NGC 4945 (Wang et al 2004) might also be underestimated because it was based on the CS/C 34 S ratio assuming no significant saturation of the CS lines.…”
