Dengue virus serotype 2 imported case from Côte d'Ivoire to Senegal, 2017

Abstract: Dengue fever is the most common arboviral infection worldwide. Its epidemiology in Africa is not yet fully understood due to the lack of awareness, the presence of other dengue-like febrile diseases, and insufficient laboratory capabilities. This paper reports on the import of dengue virus serotype 2 case from Côte d'Ivoire to Senegal in West Africa. Phylogenetic analysis based on full-length genome sequence revealed that the isolate clustered with strains of cosmopolitan genotypes from the Burkina Faso outbre… Show more

“…12,15,33 Dieng and colleagues reported importation of DENV-2 strain closely related to those circulating to Burkina Faso from Cote d'Ivoire to Senegal in 2017. 13 Interestingly, sequences of isolates obtained during this study were more closely related to strains circulating in Mauritania between 2017 and 2018 14 Analysis of the translated polyprotein reveals that Senegalese strains possess unique amino acid changes located on nonstructural proteins (NS2A, NS2B, and NS4A) (Figure 4). Mutations in these genes are known to impact virus parameters associated with spread and dispersion as well as fitness.…”

“…Many west African countries such as Burkina Faso in 2016, Cote d'Ivoire in 2017, and Senegal in 2017 reported circulation of DENV‐2 at the same timeframe, supporting a probable regional circulation of the same strain 12,15,33 . Dieng and colleagues reported importation of DENV‐2 strain closely related to those circulating to Burkina Faso from Cote d'Ivoire to Senegal in 2017 13 …”

“…The literature examined within this review demonstrates that even though mosquito-borne arboviruses such as YFV, DENV, CHIKV, RVFV, and WNV affecting human health have long been reported, there is only limited information on the occurrence and impact of these diseases in these three countries. This may be due to misdiagnosis, poor awareness, or inadequate surveillance (68). This review aims to generate an overview of the occurrence of arboviruses in the three countries by summarizing publicly available information on active human cases, serological human screenings as well as on the vectors present.…”

“…Furthermore, some cases of exported infections were reported. For example, five cases of export of arboviruses DENV-1, DENV-2 and DENV-3 from Cote d'Ivoire to France, Japan and Senegal, respectively (60,(62)(63)(64)68)…”
