Dengue in Singapore from 2004 to 2016: Cyclical Epidemic Patterns Dominated by Serotypes 1 and 2

Abstract: Abstract.Singapore has experienced periodic dengue epidemics despite maintaining a low Aedes house index. Each epidemic was associated with a switch in the predominant serotype. We investigated the temporal dynamics of dengue fever and dengue virus (DENV) and analyzed the epidemiological and entomological patterns of dengue in Singapore from 2004 to 2016. The case surveillance is based on a mandatory notification system that requires all medical practitioners to report clinically suspected and laboratory-confi… Show more

“…Zika virus Polynesian isolate (H/PF/2013) was obtained from the European Virus Archive (EVA, Marseille, France). DENV-3 was used as a reference DENV serotype because it is widespread in South-East Asia, [48][49][50][51] and was kindly provided by the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), Singapore. CHIKV SGP011 was isolated from a patient from Singapore.…”

“…We analyzed the genotyped and geo-referenced Aedes aegypti individuals collected in two densely populated areas of Singapore with a homogeneous distribution of high-rise apartment blocks. Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue virus in Singapore that, despite having a low Aedes house index (2%) and an extensive vector surveillance and control program [22], continues to experience regular dengue outbreaks [23,24]. This dataset offered an opportunity to characterize Ae.…”

“…Despite the ongoing baseline vector control programme that targets Aedes mosquitoes in residential areas, the outbreak demonstrates the possibility that human movement may allow the virus to break the 'cordon' of vector control and lead to cross-island transmission. In contrast to dengue, which has been endemic in Singapore since at least the 1960s [10,19], the 2016 Zika outbreak spread from one initial locus and across a population that has heretofore not experienced recorded Zika outbreaks; like dengue, it is expected that there be relatively little seasonal forcing on transmission risk [20]. Together, these characteristics make Singapore an ideal model system to understand Zika transmission.…”
