Dengue in Cape Verde: Vector Control and Vaccination

Abstract: In 2009, for the first time in Cape Verde, an outbreak of dengue was reported and over twenty thousand people were infected. Only a few prophylactic measures were taken. The effects of vector control on disease spreading, such as insecticide (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control, as well as an hypothetical vaccine, are estimated through simulations with the Cape Verde data.

“…Further simulations examined the amount of controls, which would have to be executed to entirely prevent an outbreak. As found in previous studies,() increasing the amount of adulticide has the greatest impact on the number of infected individuals. Again, this result could be confirmed.…”

“…A theoretical analysis (adapting and generalizing results of Dumont et al() and Rodrigues et al()) of the system of differential equations is conducted in the following closed set: normalΩ=true{false(Sh,Vh,Ih,Rh,Am,Sm,Imfalse)double-struckR+70.1emfalse|0.1emSh+Vh+Ih+Rh=Nh,1emAmkNh,1emSm+ImmNhtrue}. The sum of individuals in compartments that depict the human population must not exceed the total human population. Moreover, the amount of larvae and adult vectors in the compartments is limited, which is referred to as the total human population.…”

“…Rich literature investigating the dengue disease from the mathematical point of view exist. Some run simulations on specific regions of the globe [20,24,31,32,33] and others make studies using the effects of the disease spread considering biological issues [14,28,30,34,35]. In this paper we aim to study a preview scenario for Madeira Island in the case of a second outbreak with two serotypes circulating.…”

“…Its population is of around 506,000 residents with a sizeable diaspora community across all the world, outnumbering the inhabitants on the islands. Such facts make Cape Verde an important case study, with global implications [21].…”
