Dengue Fever With Acute Acalculous Cholecystitis

Abstract: Dengue fever (DF) with acute acalculous cholecystitis is rarely reported. To investigate the incidence, treatment, and prognosis of acute acalculous cholecystitis in DF patients, we retrospectively studied 10 patients with DF and acute acalculous cholecystitis. From October 2001 to July 2002, 131 patients were diagnosed with DF. Ten of 131 DF patients (7.63%) had complications of acute acalculous cholecystitis. Two patients underwent cholecystectomy and one underwent percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drain… Show more

“…Acalculous cholecystitis presents with right upper quadrant abdominal pain often radiating to right shoulder. Ultrasound abdomen reveals gall bladder mucosal edema and pericholecystic fluid without any gallstones secondary to vascular leakage of plasma [7][8][9]. Unlike other secondary causes, dengue related acalculous cholecystitis resolves spontaneously with sup portive care in majority of cases.…”

“…Two of these patients underwent cholecystectomy and one underwent percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage due to poor resolution. 7 In another series of 27 dengue patients presenting with fever and abdominal pain in a Northern Indian tertiary care hospital, 17 were found to have acalculus cholecystitis. 8 Pathophysiology of acute acalculous cholecystitis is bile stasis due to gall bladder dyskinesia and ischemia which results in local inflammation in the gall bladder wall.…”
