Dengue: A Minireview

Abstract: Dengue, caused by infection of any of four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4), is a mosquito-borne disease of major public health concern associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and economic cost, particularly in developing countries. Dengue incidence has increased 30-fold in the last 50 years and over 50% of the world’s population, in more than 100 countries, live in areas at risk of DENV infection. We reviews DENV biology, epidemiology, transmission dynamics including circulating serotypes a… Show more

“…In some cases, other neurological manifestations such as headache, dizziness, seizure, taste and smell impairment were also reported 12,[18][19][20][21] . Headache is one of the symptoms that is also reported in various viral infections such as dengue and chikungunya that are common in the tropical regions 22,23 and therefore may not be specific for COVID -19. In addition, the prevalence of headache in COVID-19 patients varies across studies 19,20,24 . A study found that the prevalence of headache was 17.4% (94/540) in Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak, and 14.1% (111/788) among patients outside the epicenter 21 .…”

“…Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by infection with any of four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4). 1 With an estimated 390 million annual infections in 2010, of which 96 million with clinical manifestations, dengue is a major public health burden, notably in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. 2,3 Its incidence dramatically increased in the last 50 years in these regions and has recently begun to increase in Europe.…”

“…1,3,4 Dengue is a systemic and progressive disease with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. 1,3 Following an early febrile phase that lasts for 2 to 7 days, patients enter a critical phase during which patients’ condition either improves or worsens, and may evolve into life-threatening severe dengue, with a potentially fatal outcome. 1,3 DENV serotype and secondary infection are among the factors associated with disease severity.…”

“…Moreover, ZIKV infection is a major threat during pregnancy, as the virus can be transmitted vertically and cause microcephaly [25,26]. DENV followed a similar spread-scheme as ZIKV [27]. Its first identification dates back to 1943 in Japan [28,29].…”
