Dendritic cell homeostasis

Abstract: IntroductionDendritic cells (DCs) are hematopoietic cells that belong to the antigen-presenting cell (APC) family, which also includes B cells and macrophages. Although Langerhans cells (LCs) in the skin were described in 1868, the role of DCs as APCs was not appreciated until 1973, when Steinman and Cohn first identified DCs in mouse spleen as potent stimulators of the primary immune response. 1 Shortly thereafter, several groups reported the presence of DCs in nonlymphoid tissues of rodents and humans and de… Show more

“…In contrast, different tissue DC subsets coexist in environmental surfaces, such as the skin. Langerhans cells, the first DC subpopulation described (14), express high levels of langerin, a C-type lectin receptor, and CD1a (9). Langerin is also expressed in lymphoid CD8a + DCs and on a subpopulation of tissue DCs that coexpress high levels of CD103 + (15).…”

“…Among cDCs, murine lymphoid tissue-resident DCs include two major subsets defined as CD4 + CD8a 2 CD11b + and CD8a + CD4 2 CD11b 2 DCs, respectively. Recently, an additional CD4 2 CD8a 2 CD11b + DC subtype was described (9). In the same species, CD8a + DCs congregate in T cell areas of secondary lymphoid tissues, whereas they are absent from nonlymphoid tissues (11) and are considered a nonmigratory DC population derived from blood-borne DC precursors (12) that is specialized in MHC class I presentation and cross-presentation of cell-associated Ags (13).…”
