Dendritic cell CD83: A therapeutic target or innocent bystander?

Abstract: CD83 represents an intriguing target for immunotherapy due to its preferential expression on mature DCs, the most efficient of antigen presenting cells. Based on its restricted expression pattern, structure, and the paucity of CD4 + T cells in CD83-deficient mice, multiple immunologically important functions for CD83 during immune responses have been proposed. Indeed, several studies have reported that CD83 blockade using soluble receptor constructs inhibits T cell responses in vitro and in vivo, can affect au… Show more

“…Unlike CD36 and CD44, CD83 expression is usually restricted to a population of activated dendritic cells. Its specific role and ligands remain a matter of debate (Breloer and Fleischer, 2008;Prazma and Tedder, 2008).…”

“…The transmembrane form of CD83 is expressed on mature dendritic cells (DCs), B cells, macrophages, activated T cells and T regulatory cells, and thymic epithelial cells (3,4). The expression on DCs is involved in the activation of T cell-mediated immune responses (5)(6)(7)(8); however, a soluble form of CD83, generated by splice variants or by shedding, inhibits T cell proliferation (9).…”

“…The CD83 is a surface marker that distinguishes immature and mature human dendritic cell populations (Prazma and Tedder, 2008). The CD83 is type 1 glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily and has been known to be one of the best markers for characterization of cultured DCs.…”
