Dendrimers in combination with natural products and analogues as anti-cancer agents

Abstract: For the first time, an overview of dendrimers in combination with natural products and analogues as anti-cancer agents is presented. This reflects the development of drug delivery systems, such as dendrimers, to tackle cancers. The most significant advantages of using dendrimers in nanomedicine are their high biocompatibility, good water solubility, and their entry - with or without encapsulated, complexed or conjugated drugs - through an endocytosis process. This strategy has accelerated over the years in ord… Show more

“…Various agents derived from natural compounds are one of the promising materials being considered to be used to reverse MDR . Biologically active natural products, which are extracted, purified, and characterized from various sources including plants, fungi, and even marine organisms, have some important properties such as low toxicity and are well‐tolerated in the human body . A detailed list of key natural product modulators, which reverse MDR by various mechanisms, is provided in Table .…”

“…Within the myriad of nanoparticles developed in nanomedicine, dendrimers, which are highly monodisperse, branched (multidirectional branches), star‐shaped macromolecules with nanometer‐scale dimensions and a carefully tailored architecture, have gained a broad range of applications, including medicinal applications (Kannan, Nance, Kannan, & Tomalia, ; Rolland, Turrin, Caminade, & Majoral, ), mainly in drug delivery (Medina & El‐Sayed, ; Mignani & Majoral, ; Mignani et al, ). The drugs can be encapsulated within the dendrimer interior or conjugated onto the dendrimer surface.…”
