Demystifying Septoplasty in Children

Abstract: Introduction Septum deviation in children may alter the early physiologic process of breathing, causing obligatory oral breathing and consequently changing craniofacial development and even intellect. Because of these consequences, septoplasty should be performed as early as possible. Materials and Methods The retrospective study reviewed the results of septoplasty in 40 children under 12 years old who had follow-up after surgery for a maximum period of 7 years. The research was submitted to the ethics committ… Show more

“…While several of the surgical techniques developed for adult patients prove useful, there are a number of recommended modifications, instruments, and steps in perioperative care that are unique to safe and successful septoplasties in children. 48 Septoplasty can be performed with open or endonasal approaches. Open techniques generally involve a skin incision through the columella, allowing for improved visualization and access to the structures of the anterior nose including the caudal septum and medial crura of the lower lateral cartilages.…”

“…Pediatric septoplasty can be a technically challenging procedure due to the constraints in the size of the nasal vestibule, pyriform aperture, and space within the nasal cavity. While several of the surgical techniques developed for adult patients prove useful, there are a number of recommended modifications, instruments, and steps in perioperative care that are unique to safe and successful septoplasties in children 48 …”

“…However, small nasal cavity with rela vely difficult access, difficulty and pain while removing the nasal pack, improper douching a er surgery and noncompliance with the post-opera ve advice are the difficul es that the surgeon might encounter during pediatric septoplasty. Furthermore, it is evident from the study performed by different researchers that septoplasty performed in pediatric pa ents leads to significant improvement in disease-specific quality-of-life, allows appropriate craniofacial growth and development, prevents abnormali es in soma c and psychic components thus mys fying the concept that septoplasty should only be performed a er 17 to 18 years of 10,23 age.…”

“…В 2013 и 2017 г . группа иностранных исследователей подтвердила: выполнение септопластики у детей по показаниям способствует адекватному росту и развитию лица, предотвращает развитие отклонений в соматическом и психическом здоровье ребенка и демистифицирует концепцию о том, что септопластика должна проводиться только после 17-18 лет [39,40] .…”
