Demonstrations of Real-Time Borehole Seismic From an LWD Tool

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractA new technique provides conventional borehole seismic measurements in real time while a well is being drilled. The system consists of a logging-while-drilling (LWD) tool with seismic sensors positioned near the drill bit, a seismic source at the surface, and a measurement-while-drilling (MWD) system for real-time telemetry. The seismic source is fired during pipe connections, seismic data are processed downhole and check-shot information is sent to the surfa… Show more

“…To solve the problem and to avoid multiple‐casing ringing, Seismic While Drilling (SWD) or Seismic While Tripping (SWT) techniques (e.g., Rector and Marlon ; Underhill et al . ; Poletto and Miranda ) should be applied to acquire a shallow velocity profile even before multi‐casing is installed.…”

“…Preferably, drillers like to visualize the well trajectory in the domain, which necessitates updating the conversion of the seismic image into depth several times during drilling, [20,21], or OGS, Trieste, and ENI, Milan, Italy, [22][23][24], devoted to developing the drillbit SWD technique applied continuously while drilling, and without downhole reference measurement, the seismic signal-to-noise ratio of the drillbit signal is often too weak, thus impractical for sustained industrial use in all geographical areas worldwide. In contrast, the examples of VSP-WD given in [25][26][27] illustrate how the recorded 3C geophone data can be promising, and now yield systematic excellent direct arrivals; however, the coupling quality and the vector fidelity of the 3C response of VSP-WD tools still need to be improved in comparison with the wireline VSP tools.…”

“…This led to the development of the seismic drilling tool which became an alternative to the conventional VSP by providing the same quality of data much faster. Interested readers are referred to references [94][95][96] for details about seismic waveform processing techniques used in VSP while drilling. The seismic-guided drilling concept described in [93] is shown in Figure 14.…”
