Demonstration program of population‐based lung cancer screening in China: Rationale and study design

Abstract: BackgroundLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death and has become an enormous economic burden in China. Low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) screening could reduce lung cancer mortality. The feasibility of conducting a population-based lung cancer screening with LDCT in China is uncertain.MethodsIn 2010, a demonstration program of lung cancer screening was initiated in China. High-risk individuals were enrolled in a cluster sampling design in different centers. Participants received basel… Show more

“…Recently, several large‐scale lung cancer screening programs have been initiated with special funds from central or local governments in China. In 2010, a national demonstration program was initiated with a special fund from the Chinese Central Government Public Health Special Subsidy, focusing on screening projects on lung, upper digestive tract, colorectal, liver, and nasopharyngeal cancers in rural areas of China . A lung cancer screening project was undertaken using LDCT in three regions that have a high incidence and mortality from lung cancer: Xuanwei city in Yunnan province, Dagang Oilfield in Tianjin, and Haidian District in Beijing.…”

“…In recent years, low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) has shown promising results, and related guidelines for screening have been developed in the United States (85,86). A demonstration program of population-based lung cancer screening was initiated in China (87), and it will provide opportunities to explore the feasibility of LDCT lung cancer screening in the Chinese setting.…”

“…Since 2013, lung cancer screening has been recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force . Based on this context, some programs have been carried out to assess the performance of lung cancer screening with LDCT in China . However, the performance of population‐based lung cancer screening with LDCT in China is uncertain.…”

“…Since 2009, the Lung Cancer Screening Program in Rural China (LungSPRC) has been included in the cancer early detection and treatment program, a special funded program supported by the Chinese Central Government Public Health Special Subsidy . Gejiu, a small city in Yunnan Province and the site of the largest Asian tin industry, has been reported to have the highest male lung cancer mortality among all Chinese areas, as described in a 1973 nationwide survey .…”
