Demonstration of ultra-low NA rare-earth doped step index fiber for applications in high power fiber lasers

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, we report the mode area scaling of a rare-earth doped step index fiber by using low numerical aperture. Numerical simulations show the possibility of achieving an effective area of ~700um 2 (including bend induced effective area reduction) at a bend diameter of 32cm from a 35μm core fiber with a numerical aperture of 0.038. An effective single mode operation is ensured following the criterion of the fundamental mode loss to be lower than 0.1dB/m while ensuring the higher order modes los… Show more

“…However, lanthanides are highly insoluble and are rarely found in pure form (13). Because of their spectroscopic, superconductive, and magnetic properties, lanthanides are used in lasers, wind turbines, hybrid car batteries, and military weaponry, along with many of our "everyday use" items, such as smart phones and computers (14,15). While commercially important, the low bioavailability of lanthanides prompted the belief that biology had evolved to effectively ignore these elements (16).…”

“…Fabrication of very low Dn preforms while achieving high rare-earth concentration poses several challenges. Until recently it was indeed established that the standard chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes wouldn't allow fabricating Yb doped preforms with NA lower than 0.06 [1][2][3]. In other words, the MFD of a step-index intrinsically single mode double-clad fiber wouldn't exceed 15um (figure 1).…”

“…Recently, we have successfully demonstrated Yb-doped ultra-low NA single trench fiber (STF) for mode area scaling at 1µm [12,13]. STF can achieve ESM for mode area as large as 1,000µm 2 to 1,500µm 2 at ~40cm bend diameter.…”

“…A preform was fabricated using MCVD process in conjunction with solution doping process. We have used the similar recipe to fabricate this preform as that used for Yb-doped STF [12,13]. A flat refractive index profile was obtained as shown in Fig.…”
