Demonstration of Human Papillomavirus Type 2 in a Verrucous Carcinoma of the Foot

Abstract: This report describes one case of verrucous carcinoma of the foot containing human papillomavirus type 2 DNA which was detected by the polymerase chain reaction DNA amplification method. Our findings suggest that human papillomavirus type 2, which was classically associated with palmoplantar warts, may also play a role in the pathogenesis of peripheral verrucous carcinoma.

“…1 A relationship between HPV and carcinogenesis is found in Buschke-Loewenstein tumors (giant condyloma acuminatum) 9,10 and verrucous carcinoma of the feet (epithelioma cuniculatum). 11,12 Numerous foci of the primary lesion in our case exhibited histopathological findings similar to those of a viral verruca or condyloma acuminatum. This finding supports that HPV plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this type of verrucous carcinoma.…”

“…This finding supports that HPV plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this type of verrucous carcinoma. In this case, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was performed in an effort to detect the DNA of HPVs 6,11,16,18,31,33,42,52, and 58, using a published method. 6,7 The testing was negative in all instances.…”

“…Immunosuppression and greater Sun exposure increase the risk for disease development. Also, there are indications of association with human papilloma virus infection (4,5) . Generally, verrucous carcinomas are single lesions; and cases of multiple lesions on the hand had not been reported yet.…”

“…Supposedly benign non-genital warts containing HPV-1 also have been reported to manifest Bowenoid histologic features185 and they appear capable of converting to CSCC under the influence of UVR and immunosuppression 186. HPV-2, which is classically associated with palmoplantar warts, has been found in verrucous carcinoma of the foot 187. Many of the virus types detected in the anogenital tract are seen in both squamous intraepithelial lesions (carcinoma in situ) and invasive squamous cell cancers of the skin, albeit with different frequencies and risk distributions.…”
