Demonstration of an FSO/RF hybrid-communication system on aeronautical and space applications

Abstract: The generated amount of data on high flying platforms like aircrafts, satellites and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) increases continuously, due to the technical improvement of modern sensor systems. The resulting demands for higher data rates on airborne and space platforms motivates the development of Laser Communication terminals for aircrafts and satellites in the last years. DLR's Institute of Communications and Navigation has a successful track record in developing Free Space Optical (FSO) terminals for f… Show more

“…For a reporting duration of 30 minutes, the communication was shifted five times (∼ 7 minutes) to the RF link owing to the FSO link outages in foggy weather. Authors of [75] demonstrated a hybrid RF/FSO setup that mimics the communication for airborne. The field trial experiment was demonstrated on the German Aerospace Center (DLR) campus near Munich over a 300-meter distance between static objects.…”

“…This strategy, nevertheless, could result in slower data transfer rates 25 . Eventually, another common standard approach is to implement redundant FSO lines, equipping satellites or OGSs with more than one laser communication terminal (LCT) 26 , or FSO/RF hybrid systems 27 , in order to enhance the communication system reliability.…”
