Demonstration of a 3 × 4 tunable bandwidth WSS with tunable attenuation using compact spatial light paths

Abstract: M × N wavelength selective switch (WSS) is a core component to address wavelength conflict in an optical switching node. In this paper, we design and experimentally demonstrate a performance enhanced 3 × 4 tunable bandwidth WSS (TBWSS) with tunable attenuation across the full C-band, and using compact spatial light paths. Wavelength channels from any input optical fiber port can be switched into any output optical fiber port with best insertion loss (IL) of 8.4 dB and worst IL of 12.5 dB. The attenuation tunin… Show more

“…LCoS device combing with gratings can be further developed as programmable PSP for processing optical spectrum resources [15]. Recently, demonstrations have been reported on generating a reconfigurable PSP [15][16][17][18]. In [15], Gao et al proposed and demonstrated a flexible PSP based on a 4K LCoS with a minimum pixel spacing of 3.74 µm.…”

“…But this system has large insertion loss, about 21 dB. The other is the WSS system based on liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCOS-SLM) [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. Fontaine et al [9] presented LCOS-based 5 × 5 WSS in 2012, insertion loss in extreme cases exceeds 20 dB.…”

“…The isolation degree of adjacent ports is greater than 25dB, the insertion loss of polarized light is 8dB, and the flexible configuration of ports is also supported. Nowadays, as a programmable diffractive optical element, LCoS SLM allows WSS systems to handle high-port-count networks and flex grid technology-enabled networks with good performance due to its high flexibility and structural stability [11]. Considering that the unpolarized light transmitted in fibers is not applicable to LCoS, polarization splitter elements are usually introduced into the WSS system to achieve polarization splitting, modulation and polarization combination.…”
