Demonstrating online teaching in the disciplines. A systematic approach to activity design for online synchronous tuition

Abstract: The introduction of new online technologies in Higher Education brings many challenges for staff, not only in learning new functionality, but in deciding how to use tools in pedagogically effective ways. This case study describes an initiative at the Open University (UK), which set out to provide professional development in the use of an online synchronous tool. It focuses on the teaching potential in a number of different disciplines. The account describes the development of this resource, together with the p… Show more

“…In a review of the literature, Baehr (2012) found that preparing for online tutorials takes tutors up to 20 per cent more time than preparing for face-to-face classes and that course designers also need to take account of the additional time needed for tutors to train and practice the skills necessary for them to use the technology successfully. McDonald and Campbell (2012) argue that as well as familiarity with the technicalities of the online conferencing tool, tutors need opportunities to learn about effective approaches to facilitating online sessions and how to design effective activities. These opportunities, they suggest, should be embedded within the tutor's own discipline.…”

“…More seriously, these limitations are even more prominent in the field of computer science due to the rapid development of computer science. Traditional CAI compared with online education in classroom teaching, especially in the field of computer, has the following four shortcomings [9,12]: Lack of adaptability. When students use CAI for learning, they usually only follow well‐designed steps, lacking in intelligence and interactivity.…”

“…Several presenters and moderators of the forum and live text chat were AL staff who had a particular insight into the challenges and issues facing part-time distance science tutoring staff. A similar model of a collaborative team approach by distance tutors was previously used successfully in a different project to create an online staff development resource (Macdonald & Campbell, 2012).…”
