Demographic Features and Natural History of Intermediate-Risk Multifocal Versus Unifocal Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms

Abstract: Demographics of both cohorts were similar, as was the overall incidence of worrisome features. Because meaningful size progression primarily occurred in the dominant cyst, our findings support surveillance based on the dominant cyst in MF disease.

“…Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm surveillance data on these patients have been previously reported. 12 Baseline characteristics were generally similar between the 30 T-IPMN patients and the 131 C-IPMN controls ( Table 1). The [13]; P < 0.001) and more likely to be male (66.7% vs 42.7%; P = 0.02) than the controls.…”

“…We did not model for multifocal IPMN or for remnant recurrence of a non-invasive IPMN. 10,11 Other benign lesions (classified as serous cystic neoplasm, pseudocyst, simple cysts, and autoimmune or chronic pancreatitis) did not have any impact on survival, any risk of requiring surgery or turning malignant. The true nature could only be identified following surgery (histopathology).…”

“…Multifocal IPMNs are defined when the number of IPMNs in the pancreas is two or larger. The prevalence of multifocal IPMNs, either synchronous or metachronous, has been reported to vary widely, ranging from 0% to 83% (3031). Nevertheless, the proper management of multifocal IPMNs has not been established to date.…”
