“…The average age in the current study was 75 years for men and 77 years for women. The mean age in the current study is consistent with other studies that noted ectropion is more common in the elderly with over 95% of cases occurring in patients over 60 years of age …”

“…It has been previously noted that, following excision of lid lesions, up to 7% of patients may develop cicatricial ectropion . The current study catchment population has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world . As the lower lid is a common site for non‐melanoma skin carcinoma, and there is a high rate of preexisting actinic skin damage in this population, there is a greater risk of postoperative induced cicatricial ectropion after excision of periocular skin lesions.…”

“…Many such cases are presumably included under other general categories after exclusion from the etiologies listed above. For instance, in Ehrlich et al, 11 65 patients (45%) were labeled as "unknown pathogenesis" while Bush et al 15 included 9 cases of unspecified "cicatricial ectropion." While the same elderly Caucasian population with actinic skin changes is also often affected by eyelid malignancies and is therefore included in case series of post-eyelid excision ectropion and reconstruction, such cases are inherently different from those with actinic skin without previous surgical procedures.…”
