Demographic and population response of the threatened coral Acropora cervicornis (Scleractinia, Acroporidae) to fireworm corallivory

Abstract: Introduction: The fireworm Hermodice carunculata is a widespread polychaete that can prey upon many coral species. However, few studies have examined the effect of fireworm predation on coral demographics during non-outbreak periods.  Objective: To determine whether predation by H. carunculata compromised the growth, survival, and population performance of the threatened coral Acropora cervicornis.  Methods: Nursery-reared coral fragments (n = 99) were fixed to the bottom of Punta Melones reef in t… Show more

“…Today, P. strigosa is rare in the study area. Healthier coral reef systems are known to attract coral larvae [25,49], suggesting that active outplanting efforts may, at least in part, counteract coral diseases like SCTLD.…”

“…Indeed, a study by Hernández-Delgado and Ortiz-Flores [22] along the western coast of Culebra, where our study sites were located, reported consistent water quality conditions. Moreover, the study areas were similar in that both exhibited low coral cover (below 5% [25]), primarily dominated by Porites astreoides and P. porites.…”

“…Less than 5% of the reef's bottom is covered by corals. Furthermore, coral species diversity is low, dominated by Porites astreoides and P. porites (Santiago-Padua et al, 2023). PMEL has been selected for an active nursery and restoration project run by the local non-profit community-based organization Sociedad Ambiente Marino (SAM) due to its social, economic, and ecological importance.…”
