Demographic and diagnostic characteristics of psychiatric clinic outpatients in the U.S.A., 1961.

Abstract: This report describes rates of outpatient psychiatric clinic usage for various demographic groups in the United States by age, including single years for children, sex, color and marital status. Major and detailed psychiatric diag noses are also in vestigated. These data come from the national reporting program on outpatient psychiatric clinics and the 1960 census information. Differences by geographic region are also described.

“…The low social class of the population may be a contributing factor in the high overall nonattendance rate, as found in studies investigating the relationship between social class and motivation for psychotherapy (Brill and Storrow, 2960;Frank et al, 2957;Holingshead and Redlick, i958;Lief and Lief, 2965;Robinson, et al, 5954;Rosenthal and Frank, 2958 ).
