Demirjian’s Eight Teeth Method for Dental age Estimation in Nepalese Population

Abstract: Background: Demirjian’s method is widely used method for dental age estimation. This study was conducted with objectives of applying Demirjian’s 8 teeth method to estimate age in Nepalese Population and to determine Nepal-specific formulas. Methods: We had used the Orthopantomographs of Nepalese people of age above five and below 23 years. The radiographs were compared to the ‘Tooth Development Chart’ and each tooth studied was assigned with any one of the 10 developmental stages using Demirijian’s 8 teeth meth… Show more

“…14 Referring to these concerns, Subedi et al has derived Nepalese population specific equation to estimate the dental age from Demirjian's 8-teeth method and that study has given acceptable results. 32 However, the method still needs to be tested in broader Nepalese population to draw the conclusion.…”

“…Similarly, in a few studies done in selected Nepalese children population where Demirjian, Willems and Nollas methods have been used separately or in combined form have also found to underestimate the age. 14,[16][17][18][19] The application of the Demirjian, Willems and Nolla methods in the same design has been carried out only in four studies. 2,27,32,38 Maber et al, 32 Hegde S et al 38…”

“…15 The major bias in age estimation is the differences in growth and development as well as other factors like hereditary, sex, nutrition, function and environment in different ethnic groups of population which must be taken into significant consideration while applying age estimation methods. 12,15 In the Nepalese population, Demirjian method has been used independently 16,17 as well as with the Nolla method 14 or with Willems in numerous studies. 18,19 However, there have been no comparative studies between Demirjian, Nolla and Willems methods, thus this study aims to evaluate and compare the validity and accuracy of these methods in Nepalese children.…”
