Demand for Intercity Bus Services Innovative Approach to Estimating Demand for Intercity Bus Services in Rural Environment

Abstract: Because existing models have their limitations, there is a significant need for a model to estimate demand for intercity bus services, especially in rural areas. The general objective of this research was to develop an intercity mode choice model that can be incorporated into a statewide travel demand model to estimate demand for rural intercity bus services. Four intercity transportation modes were considered in the study: automobile, bus, rail, and air. A stated preference survey was conducted of individuals… Show more

“…The volume of traffic should be decreased by encouraging fast, fixed, scheduled and economical public transport which includes buses (BMTC), metro rail, etc. Recent studies [4] show four transportation modes such as automobile, bus, rail, roads, and a mixed model for developing transportation networks. Further, the time-table should be designed in such a way that the time of arrival of the bus at a certain area should be at least 5-10 minutes from the time of departure of a metro of the same area so that there is no wastage of time and thus the owners of private vehicles will be encouraged to use the public transport facilities.…”

“…There is still space for filling the gap in research made. It might be the models used [4] that cannot be directly transferred to other models due to the modal choice. Specific benefits in monetary terms for rural areas are considered [2] and the small urban areas were not covered.…”
