Numerical simulations using a generalized interpolation material point method (GIMP) and material point method were introduced into the studying of granular mixing in a rotary drum. A Drucker–Prager model that has an equal size with a Mohr–Coulomb criterion was adopted to predict the failure behavior of granular matter. Experiments and discrete element method simulations were conducted to validate the models, and GIMP was finally used due to its accuracy and the ability for eliminating the crossing boundary noise. Velocity field of bed surface and standard deviation were used to measure the mixing performance. In particular, the influence of mesh size, elastic modulus, cohesion, and filling level were investigated. The results of simulations show that the utilization of GIMP significantly reduces the computing cost of simulation. The analysis of mixing performance shows that mixing performance decreases with the increase of elastic moduli, cohesion of granular matter, and filling levels.

A heat transfer model based on the discrete element software EDEM and the secondary development tool C++ is developed to simulate the mixing and heat transfer process of particles under different parameters. This model is validated by comparison with experimental data and proved reasonable. It aims to study the heat transfer law of flowing particles in an externally heated rotary kiln and reveal the correlation between mixing and heat transfer from the mechanism. The results show that the combination of the total contact area between adherent particles and the drum wall, the mean temperature difference between adherent particles and the drum wall, the total contact area between particles, and the mean temperature difference between particles affect the heat transfer process. Changes in the temperature differences caused by the mixing rate dominate the heat transfer at different speeds or filling rates.

A series of experiments were carried out on an indirectly heated pilot scale rotary kiln. These experiments aimed at recording, while the solids flow, the temperature profiles of the freeboard gas, the solid particle bulk and the wall, as well as the power supplied for heating, over a range of operating conditions. Based on these data, the experimental wall-to-solid heat transfer coefficient was determined through an energy balance. The effects of operating conditions, namely rotational speed, filling degree, lifter shape and controlled temperature, on the heat transfer coefficient are discussed. A model based on dimensional analysis is proposed to calculate the wall-to-solid heat transfer coefficient for low to medium heating temperatures (100-500°C). The experimental and calculated results are in good agreement. The experimental results are also compared to the predictions of some existing models. While the predictions are within a reasonable order of magnitude with regard to the experimental results, these models fail to represent actual variations with operating conditions satisfactorily rotary kiln; heat transfer coefficient; wall-to-solid heat transfer; dimensional analysis; lifter; bed depth profile
