DEM-MBD Coupling Simulation and Analysis of the Working Process of Soil and Tuber Separation of a Potato Combine Harvester

Abstract: To address the competing relationship between tuber damage and soil removal in potato combine harvesting, this study investigated the operating mechanism of a belt-rod type separator of a small-scale self-propelled potato combine harvester and the separation performance between tuber and soil. The main factors affecting the tuber-soil separation characteristics were derived from a theoretical analysis of the belt-rod angle, belt-rod linear velocity, and harvester forward speed. A simulation model based on DEM … Show more

“…For example, crops such as sweet potatoes, potatoes and carrots have very different fruit sizes, shapes and densities compared to peanut pods. Further evaluation is necessary to determine the suitability of current fruit-soil separating devices for fruit-soil separation conditions in these crops [22][23][24]. The evaluation includes whether there is a need to adjust the structure and operating parameters of the fruit-soil separating device and, if so, how to adjust them to suit the characteristics of different sub-soil crop fruits.…”

“…Shi et al [18] improved the design of a vertical cavity seeder based on the DEM-MBD coupling method and investigated the interference and anti-entry characteristics of cavity seeds in soil. Li et al [19] used DEM-MBD coupled simulation and experimental analysis to optimize the parameters related to the soil and tuber separation process in a potato harvester and validated the effectiveness of the simulation model through field tests and error calculations. Chen et al [20] developed a sweet potato ridge-forming machine with a plowshare structure and optimized the surface structure parameters of the plowshare through DEM-MBD coupled simulation, effectively reducing the cultivation resistance during machine operation.…”

“…At the end of the digging process, there is still some soil and other impurities attached to the tuber that need to be removed, using the sieving technology, in the second separation phase [49][50][51][52]. Sieve screen can have significant sieving effect on the second separation phase.…”
