Deltamethrin-induced oxidative stress and biochemical changes in tissues and blood of catfish (Clarias gariepinus): antioxidant defense and role of alpha-tocopherol

Abstract: BackgroundThe pyrethroid class of insecticides, including deltamethrin, is being used as substitutes for organochlorines and organophosphates in pest-control programs because of their low environmental persistence and toxicity. This study was aimed to investigate the impact of commonly used pesticides (deltamethrin) on the blood and tissue oxidative stress level in catfish (Clarias gariepinus); in addition to the protective effect of α-tocopherol on deltamethrin induced oxidative stress.Catfish were divided in… Show more

“…Figures in parenthesis show percentage decrease/increase (-/+) over control group. Similar kind of reduction in total protein content in serum of Channagachua after administration of dichlorvos (DDVP) was reported 37 . Administration of zinc sulfate solution to the fish Cyprinuscarpio significantly deceased serum protein level 38 .…”

“…Necrotic cell death induced by calcium overload is generally thought to be due to the activation of the cellular enzymes such as nuclease and lipase 35 . Increased intra cellular calcium is associated with mitochondrial calcium accumulation and activation of caspases, which initiates apoptotic cell death 36,37 . WSR extract probably causes a marked reduction in the intracellular Ca++ level of renal epithelial cells, which in turn reverses the possibility of apoptosis.…”

“…They are sometimes also used for controlling disease vectors. Among common pesticides, organophosphorus compounds are widely used in agriculture, industries and medicines (Amin and Hashem, 2012), but are being successively replaced by pyrethroids due to their higher photo stability, low toxicity in birds and mammals, high effectiveness even in low concentrations, and easy disintegration (Bradbury and Coats, 1989).…”
