Delivery mode and strategic management simulation outcomes

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze learning assurance measures derived from a business simulation as part of capstone business strategy courses delivered via distance learning (DL) compared to traditional classroom (on-ground [OG]) delivery modes using experiential learning theory. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 595 undergraduate capstone business students from 21 course sections taught over a four-year period in a medium-sized private master’s level college is investigated. “…Performance for individual students in varying majors has shown that the students of specific majors, such as finance, often outperform the students of the other majors (Alstete & Beutell, 2021). Our intent was to examine the teams as a whole and to explore whether the teams where all students were of the same major, e.g.…”

“…The same simulation (GLO-BUS) was used for all the students across the classes. GLO-BUS is well-established as a popular simulation game for business capstone courses with applied decision-making and rich complexity (Alstete & Beutell, 2021). The additional resources for the simulation such as the playbook, learning videos, and helpful documents were provided to all the students in all the classes.…”

“…These engaging activities improve understanding through virtual experience, skill development and practical decision-making. Simulations are particularly effective in business education and can expose learners to realistic management scenarios and allow them to practice and apply their knowledge and abilities in a safe and controlled environment (Alstete and Beutell, 2019; Alstete and Beutell, 2021). Research has shown that average student engagement levels in business education is higher in simulation and gaming than with traditional course experiences and can produce significantly higher improvements in self-efficacy (Rogmans et al , 2019; Tompson and Dass, 2000).…”

“…As a result, this study uses performance as the key outcome measure; if the aim of educators is to develop effective future managers who can achieve successful business performance, understanding how the level of cognitive realism of a game can affect this outcome is critical. Furthermore, performance can be considered an important measure as it serves as an effective metric of learning and skills development in the context of simulation games (Alstete and Beutell, 2020;Taub et al, 2020;Harteveld and Sutherland, 2015). Through such learning and skills development, future business leaders become better equipped to run successful, high performance businesses (Jim enez-Jim enez and Sanz-Valle, 2011;Siepel et al, 2021).…”
