Delineation of Groundwater Potential Zones (GWPZs) in a Semi-Arid Basin through Remote Sensing, GIS, and AHP Approaches

Abstract: Groundwater occurrence in semi-arid regions is variable in space and time due to climate patterns, terrain features, and aquifer properties. Thus, accurate delineation of Groundwater Potential Zones (GWPZs) is essential for sustainable water resources management in these environments. The present research aims to delineate and assess GWPZs in a semi-arid basin of San Luis Potosi (SLP), Mexico, through the integration of Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Analytic Hierarchy Process (A… Show more

“…In relation to groundwater potential, drainage density is a factor that plays a role in determining surface runoff and permeability (Castillo et al, 2022). This is closely related to local hydrogeological conditions, considering that drainage water can be in the form of infiltration or discharge water.…”

“…Various studies on groundwater potential zones using the AHP method have been conducted, and the results are reliable (Castillo et al, 2022;Radulović et al, 2022). The AHP method is also convenient in obtaining very large alternative weights and can describe qualitative data in quantitative form with numerical assignments arranged into an analytic hierarchy.…”

“…Landsat cloud free images of 30m resolution from the USGS portal for the years 1990, 2000 and 2021 were downloaded and registered in the ArcGIS 10.3 software [imagery particulars are given in the Table 1]. Pre-processed satellite images are loaded into the ERDAS GIS platform (14,15) . True colour composite maps were produced using the red, green, and blue bands (RGB) of each scene in the module "RGB Composite".…”

“…The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is an excellent method for identifying the river basin's groundwater potential zones (Saaty 1990; Castillo et al 2022). It allows to breakdown the problem into a hierarchy and includes both qualitative and quantitative aspects throughout the evaluation process (Mallick et al 2019;Senapati and Das 2022).…”
