We studied the relationship between Facebook advertisements from Chinese state media on the global media environment by examining the link between advertisements and online news coverage of China by other countries. We found that countries that see a large increase in views of Facebook advertisement from Chinese state media also see news coverage of China become more positive. News coverage also becomes more likely to use keywords that suggest a point of view favorable to China. One possible explanation is that by drawing greater attention to the issues emphasized by Chinese state media, the advertisements help Chinese state media set the news agenda covered by other media sources.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of Agenda Setting Theory, this paper takes the international flagship journal "Journalism Studies" as the object, and uses the Meta-Analysis method to re-count a large number of the existing empirical literature, and analyze the transmutation in Agenda Setting theory in terms of research focus, subject areas and research methods over the past 12 years by statistical indicators in the relevant literature and corresponding statistical formulas. The results show that Agenda Setting research cannot escape from seeking to establish a link between the salience of media issues and the public's perception of the importance of these issues; the thematic focus of this theoretical research goes beyond the traditional concern for public affairs and continues to spill over to the military, climate, finance, and other fields, which expand the scope of application of the theory; with the development of network science and artificial intelligence, network analysis and machine learning methods are gradually being used in Agenda Setting research, injecting new perspectives and more possibilities into this theoretical research.

Science governs the future of the mesopelagic zone

The potential of the mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m depth) to provide natural resources and ecosystem services is of increasing interest to a broad range of societal stakeholders. As this interest grows, divergent ideas about its current and future role in supporting human life are being expressed in scientific and public discourse. We use automated content analysis to identify 13 key topics about the mesopelagic zone from 2226 scientific abstracts and 4066 tweets. Two dominant ideas emerge: (1) the exploitation of fish resources and (2) the role of the mesopelagic zone as a carbon sink. We find that, in the absence of significant mesopelagic zone policy, science plays a de facto governing role by shaping how the ecosystem is known to the public and policymakers alike. These results indicate the need and potential for new knowledge and governance arrangements that can broaden the range of meanings and knowledge needed to anticipate future uses of deeply uncertain ecosystems and resources.
