Delayed post‐prandial lipid metabolism in subjects with intra‐abdominal visceral fat accumulation

Abstract: These results suggest that post-prandial lipid metabolism is impaired in subjects with intra-abdominal visceral fat accumulation, irrespective of BMI, leading to the development and progression of coronary atherosclerosis.

“…Several clinical studies were conducted for analyzing the relationship of LPL mass, either in pre-heparin plasma (or serum) or PHP, to visceral fat accumulation. We and other groups have reported that intra-abdominal visceral fat area assessed by CT at umbilical level had an inverse relationship to LPL mass and activity in PHP [26][27][28]. Similar results were obtained on the association between intra-abdominal visceral fat and pre-heparin LPL mass [19] by recruiting a total of 58 subjects comprising 50 hyperlipidemic and 8 normolipidemic subjects.…”

“…Hence, we used a slice of a CT image at the umbilical level to measure VFAs and subcutaneous fat areas (SFAs). We collected the data for SFA and VFA by a previously reported technique [55,56]. We determined the total fat area (TFA) as the sum of the SFA and VFA, and the V/S ratio, as the VFA divided by the SFA.…”

“…The intra-abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat areas were determined at the umbilical level by the previously reported CT scanning technique. 7,8 Measurement of serum leptin Measurement of serum leptin was carried out by a radioimmunoassay as described by Zhongmin et al 22 This assay measures the total (free plus bound) leptin in the blood. Sensitivity was 0.5 ng=ml and the intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 3 and 8%, respectively.…”
