Delayed gastric emptying as an independent predictor of mortality in gastroparesis

Abstract: Gastroparesis is defined as delayed gastric emptying (GE) associated with symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, postprandial fullness, early satiation and epigastric pain. 1 Gastroparesis may lead, in the most severe cases, to altered quality of life and nutritional impairment and ultimately to death. The epidemiology as well as the natural history of gastroparesis remains poorly investigated. A recent study evaluated the economic burden of gastroparesis between US$4000 and US$9000 per patient per year. 2 Two … Show more

“…Current treatment of GP is comprised of symptomatic measures (dietary adjustments, antiemetics, nutritional support) as well as causal treatments targeting the proven or assumed pathophysiological mechanisms (prokinetic drugs, gastric electrical stimulation, pylorus-directed therapies) 1–3 5 6 8 9. Despite the existence of several options, treatment of GP is often partially effective or ineffective 4–6 8 9 25…”

“…Severe cases can lead to impaired quality of life, dehydration, and weight loss ( Yu et al, 2017 ). Consequently, gastroparesis has been shown to be associated with increased mortality ( Jung et al, 2009 ; Gourcerol et al, 2022 ). The main etiologies are diabetes, surgery, and opioids but 40% of gastroparesis remain idiopathic ( Soykan et al, 1998 ; Schol et al, 2021a , b ; Soliman et al, 2021 ).…”

“…The recent article by Gourcerol et al 3 evaluated the impact of gastroparesis, confirmed by delayed gastric emptying using optimal testing, on mortality. The authors retrospectively examined 1563 consecutive patients to assess whether delayed gastric emptying predicted disease‐specific mortality.…”
