Delay spread measurements for the digital cellular channel in Toronto

Abstract: This paper describes a set of measurements performed in the Toronto area, in order to assess the impact of multipath propagation on the performance of the TIA IS-54 digital standard. Five existing cells were systematically surveyed: two in downtown Toronto, two in the suburbs, and one in a suburbanlrural area. A sweeping correlator apparatus with a 0.1 p s resolution and 910 MHz carrier frequency, and an omnidirectional antenna was used. In one of the cells, the measurements were repeated with a 60 degree beam… Show more

“…The CIR h exhibits a sparse structure. Therefore, the median of all samples of h is used as estimator of the noise floor [49]. All values of the CIR below a threshold that is 6 dB above this noise floor are set to zero.…”

“…We first define the threshold for minimum amplitude assumed as signals so that the samples having amplitudes lower than the threshold are removed. Following [6], we set the threshold to achieve a Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) by taking the probability that noise exceeds the threshold in any given sample without an actual signal sample as 5%. We apply CFAR in each period of cross-correlation sequence, Surabaya Merauke so that for four periods we will get four impulse responses.…”

“…We apply CFAR in each period of cross-correlation sequence, Surabaya Merauke so that for four periods we will get four impulse responses. A sample is declared to contain a valid signal if the threshold was exceeded at that point in all recorded delay profile [6]. The result of the measurement is a time-averaged power delay profile.…”

“… Large obstacles between the phone and the sector antenna can cause a phone to rely on a stronger reflected wave coming from some other direction. The above analysis is then invalid, but measurements show that the instances when it is comparable with the one coming from the direction of the antenna are quite rare in the field [27].  In some cases when sector antennas are mounted on buildings, the distance between them can be much larger than assumed in our calculations.…”
