Delay Lines

Abstract: Delay lines provide the ability of controlling the time delay of a signal. Delay lines are basic and important elements that can find applications in radar, communications, and signal processing. In general, there are two types of delay lines: electrical delay lines and optical delay lines. Because an optical delay line has a much wider bandwidth and higher speed, it is a good candidate for ultra wideband systems and has attracted significant interest recently. In this article, we will first discuss electrical… Show more

“…optical time domain multiplexing can be achieved [1]. Usually a delay line is employed to fine tune the timing of the signal, existing several approaches mainly based on resonant elements with a slow-light effect or on the combination of wavelength dependent dispersion with wavelength converters [2][3][4]. Another alternative to generate time delays is to select a different and longer physical path for the signal [5].…”

“…Optical delay lines (ODL) are important components which are used to provide a timed delay in a system. When these ODLs are implemented using integrated chips they show various advantages such as reduced cost, size, weight and power consumption [5]. They have various applications such as optical beam forming networks for antenna arrays, imaging processing units, radio on fibre links and devices, OCT systems and sensing units.…”

“…It brings convenience and energy-saving features to daily life, for example, the delay light control system and the delay air conditioner control system. , It can maintain the safe operation of systems, such as the alternating current (AC) motor control and the time-limit current quick-break protection. , It is also used in controlling the time delay of signals to improve the system’s bandwidth, a.k.a. delay line. A wide variety of delay characteristic switches have been designed with different mechanical structures or electrical circuits. − ,, However, current devices are usually complex and need an external power source. , This is required to achieve the delay characteristic switching function in a simple but self-powered way, enabling smart systems.…”
