Delay-Constrained Admission and Bandwidth Allocation for Long-Reach EPON

Abstract: Abstract-Next generation Passive Optical Network (PON) technology has been evolving to consolidate the metro and access networks in order to offer enhanced capacity, high split ratio and reduced deployment cost per subscriber. However, transmission of the signals to long distances up to 100km leads to increased propagation delay whereas high split ratio may lead to long cycle times resulting in large queue occupancies and long packet delays. In this article, we present a delay-constrained admission control mec… Show more

“…The authors of [17] have proposed an integer linear programming (ILP) optimization technique over MTP to optimize grant sizing; nevertheless, the OLT requires sufficient central processing unit (CPU) power to be able to formulate and solve such an optimization model. Reference [18] further extends the work done in [17] by employing admission control mechanisms for different traffic classes. A DBA algorithm is proposed in [19], in which the authors combine MTP with a BR scheme based on adaptive threshold-based optical burst assembly.…”

“…Every ONU contributes in the same proportion to the total network load, using a symmetric model as occurs in the majority of studies in PONs and Long-Reach PONs ( [13][14] [31][32][33]). The distance between ONUs and the OLT is set to 100 km, a realistic LR-PON setup [31][32][33]. The simulated traffic exhibits the properties of self-similarity using the traffic generator provided by Kramer in [34] (packets between 84 and 1538 bytes following the Ethernet standard).…”

“…where RT T j is the average round-trip-time of the j-th serverdispatcher end-to-end connection, r j (t) is the communication rate of the j-th virtual link at the t-th slot, and Ω j is the j-th virtual link power coefficient that depends on the maximum segment size of the transmitted packets and on the number of per-segment ACKs as described in [10], [19].…”
