Delamination of Kaolinite by Intercalation of Urea Using Milling

Abstract: The effect of milling on structure of kaolinite-urea intercalates were studied. Untreated and treated kaolinite samples were examined by Field scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The basal spacing of kaolinite measured by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) increased from 1.02 to 3.62 nm after intercalation by urea. Significantly, nature of intercalation was reached through formation of hydrogen bonds between urea and both Si-O … Show more

“…It consists of the main mineral referred to as kaolinite. The kaolin is composed of abundantly 1:1 clay mineral Al2Si2O5(OH)4 structure per alumina-silicate producing bulky congested particles of SiO4 tetrahedral sheets and AlO2(OH)4 octahedral sheets [5]. The AlOHOSi hydrogen bonds is attached to each two unbroken layers since the kaolinite layer is neutral.…”

“…The surface properties of clay determines their industrial application [6]. Numerous techniques have been proposed to enhance the surface properties of clay materials, comprising intercalation [7], chemical activation [8] mechanochemical activation [9,10] and thermo-chemical treatment [11]. Equally as the chemical activation technique has been established, acid treatment is an effective method to develop the functioning of clay minerals [3].…”

“…The sample was placed in an oven running at a temperature of 80 o C for 30 minutes. The kaolin was finally washed with distilled water, filtered with the aid of filter paper, and dried in an oven operating at a temperature of 100 o C. The leaching process was adopted from Jikan et al [19].…”
