Deinococcus cellulosilyticus sp. nov., isolated from air

Abstract: A pink-coloured bacterial strain, 5516J-15 T , was isolated from an air sample from Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The organism was found to have resistance to UV radiation typical of members of the genus Deinococcus, and it was placed within the radiation of the Deinococcus on a phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Strain 5516J-15 T shared low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (84.5-87.8 %) with Deinococcus species, showing highest sequence similarity to Deinococcus deserti VCD115 T (87.8 %)… Show more

“…The airborne Deinococcus was firstly found from hospital air contaminant (strain SARK) (Murray and Robinow, 1958), and isolated later from indoor air dust (Christensen and Kristensen, 1981) and recently from island surface air (Weon et al, 2007). The two Deinococcus strains isolated in the current study are the first documentation of the genus Deinococcus from upper boundary of the biosphere, the upper atmosphere.…”

“…The D-values were calculated from the regression line of the exponential slope of the survival curves as described in Arrage et al (1993a 2 and TR1103-3 exhibited comparable UV-resistance to the most UV-resistant isolate from surface atmosphere. Deinococcus-related isolates (ST0316 and TR0125) exhibited extreme UV resistance common to described Deinococcus strains (Weon et al, 2007). The high UVresistant isolate TR0126 is a Streptomyces-related strain.…”

“…Currently, a large number of studies are being carried out on Deinococcus species because of their high resistance to ionizing radiation. These species have been isolated from a wide range of environments, e.g., desert soil (De Groot et al 2005;Rainey et al 2007;Peng et al 2009), air (Yeon et al 2007;Yoo et al 2010), marine Wsh (Shashidharand and Bandekar 2009), aquifers (Suresh et al 2004), plant rhizosphere (Lai et al 2006), hot springs (Ferreira et al 1997), high atmosphere (Yang et al 2009) and stratosphere (Yang et al 2010). The majority of Deinococcus species are reported to have optimal growth temperatures in the mesophilic range.…”

“…In conclusion, an emended description of the genus Deinococcus was published, showing that the cells can be spherical or rod-shaped [4]. Members of the genus Deinococcus were isolated from various environmental habitats including air [5-7], arid soil [1,8-12], water and activated sludge [13-15], alpine environments [16], rhizosphere [17], Antarctica [18], hot springs [19], aquifer [20], marine fish [21] and radioactive sites [22]. Here we present a summary classification and a set of features for D. maricopensis LB-34 T , together with the description of the complete genomic sequencing and annotation.…”
