Introduction The influence of dehydration on tooth shade constitutes a significant aspect, making it a pivotal area of study, particularly within the field of restorative dentistry. This prospective study was done to analyze, using a spectrophotometer, how dehydration affects the shade of the teeth. Materials and methods Twenty-five participants were recruited in this prospective study that took place in the Dental Care Center of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (Lebanon) between October 2022 and January 2023. The inclusion criteria for this study primarily comprised four intact maxillary incisors. On the other hand, damage, cavities, restorations, and staining served as exclusion criteria. The VITA Easyshade Advance (Vident, Brea, CA) spectrophotometer was used to record the measurements. The measures of L (which represents darkness to lightness), a (which represents greenness to redness), and b (which represents blueness to yellowness) were registered at the center of each tooth's labial surface at baseline and then at 10-minute intervals for 30 minutes while the teeth were dehydrating due to the placement of a rubber dam. The color difference (ΔE) was later calculated using L*a*b* measures, with the perceptibility threshold set at ΔE00=0.8. Statistical analyses were performed using the Friedman test, the Bonferroni post hoc test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results The different color changes represented by ΔE (ΔE1, ΔE2, and ΔE3) were found to be significantly higher than the perceptibility threshold of 0.8 (p<0.001). A statistically significant difference was found between ΔE1 and ΔE3 (p<0.05). Moreover, a statistically significant difference was found between L0, L10, L20, and L30 (p<0.001). Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) exist between the means of L0 and L20, the means of L0 and L30, the means of L10 and L20, and the means of L10 and L30. Conclusion This study showed that dehydration affected the shade of the teeth: Lightness increased, and therefore, the teeth appeared whiter. Dentists should consider the hydration status of the teeth when evaluating color for treatments, as dehydration can significantly affect shade matching: the more the dehydration time elapses, the more the color difference compared to the baseline increases.

Amaç: Bu in vitro çalışmanın amacı, dehidratasyon süresinin çekilmiş insan dişlerindeki renk değişimine etkisinin bir spektrofotometre kullanılarak belirlenmesidir. Materyal-Metot: 15 adet çekilmiş insan üst keser dişi kullanıldı. Dişlere ait renk analizi bir spektrofotometre cihazıyla (SpectroShade Micro, MHT, İtalya) gerçekleştirildi. Başlangıç renk ölçümü, diş yüzeyindeki fazla su uzaklaştırıldıktan sonra yapıldı. 2. ve 3. ölçümler sırasıyla, dişler 1 ve 2 saat kurutulduktan sonra gerçekleştirildi. Tüm ölçümler beyaz ve siyah olmak üzere iki farklı zemin kullanılarak yapıldı. Dişlerin L*, a* ve b* değerleri tespit edildi ve iki ayrı ölçüm aşaması arasında oluşan renk değişim (ΔE) değerleri hesaplandı. Farklı dehidratasyon zamanı arasındaki L*, a*, b* ve ΔE değerleri arasındaki fark karşılaştırıldı. İstatistiksel analiz, genelleştirilmiş lineer model, Tukey HSD testi, iki yönlü Robust testi ve Bonferroni post-hoc düzeltmesi ile yapıldı. Tüm testlerde anlamlılık düzeyi p<0,05 idi. Bulgular: Zaman ana etkisi, L* değerleri üzerinde istatistiksel fark yarattı. Başlangıç L* değerleri ortalaması; dehidratasyondan sonra elde edilen L* değerleri ortalamasından küçük idi (p<0.05, Varyans analizi). Örneklerden, beyaz zeminde elde edilen b* değerlerinin ortalaması; siyah zeminde elde edilen b* değerlerinin ortalamasından daha düşük idi (p<0.05, Varyans analizi). Faklı zaman aralıklarında ve farklı zeminlerde, örneklerden elde edilen ΔE değerleri arasında istatistiksel fark yoktu (p>0.05, Robust testi). Sonuç: Bu çalışmanın bulgularından, dehidratasyon süresinin dişlerin rengini etkileyebileceği ve dehidratasyondan 1 saat sonra ve daha uzun sürede diş renginin olduğundan daha açık görünebileceği sonucuna ulaşılabilir.

Background Despite developments in dental shade selection methods, shade selection is still a challenge affecting aesthetic outcomes. Accurate color evaluation is an important factor in dental restoration procedures. An accurate determination of tooth color is crucial for obtaining a definitive result. Aim and Objective This study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting the shade-taking accuracy of digital shade-taking devices. The objective was to evaluate the effect of distance, contact angle, moisture condition, and surrounding light on the shade-taking accuracy of two digital shade-taking devices. Materials and Methods Bovine teeth were used and thawed in running tap water. The soft tissue remnants are cleansed using a scalpel and polished using 1500 SiC. The shade and color parameters ∆E were recorded at different distances, angles, moisture, and surrounding light. Results One-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant color shifting at 2mm and 3mm measuring distance for both devices (p<0.05). A contact angulation of 150, 300, and 450 significantly shifted the color measurement by both devices(p<0.05). In the case of moisture, both devices showed color shifting in certain conditions, however, VITA5 was less affected by the moisture. In the case of surrounding lightness, adding dental unit light significantly shifted the color parameter for VITA5 (p= 0.004), however, it was statistically insignificant for VITA4 (p=0.537) Conclusions The distance, angulation, moisture, and surrounding light can affect the shade-taking accuracy of the digital shade guide. The clinician must maintain a standard condition to accurately take shade using a digital shade guide.
