Degree of coherence for electromagnetic fields

Abstract: The relationship between the visibility of fringes and the degree of spatial coherence in electromagnetic two-pinhole interference is assessed. It is demonstrated that the customary definition of the degree of coherence of an electromagnetic field is flawed and a new quantity, free of the formal drawbacks, is introduced. The new definition, which is shown to be consistent with known results for Gaussian statistics, has some unusual properties characteristic only for electromagnetic fields. The degree of cohere… Show more

“…In [4], to describe depolarization of these fields, the authors offered another, "two-point" correlation approach. The main its idea consists in determining the degree of correlation similarity between orthogonal components of laser wave amplitudes in the points and within the field of scattered coherent radiation [22,27].…”

“…In parallel with conventional statistical investigations, formed in the works by Nye [4], Berry [5], Soskin [6] during the recent 10 -15 years is a new optical direction in describing the structure of polarizationinhomogeneous fields within the frames of the topological approach -singular optics. The new polarization-correlation approach to the analysis of spatial-coordinate distributions of coherent radiation fields offered and developed in the works by Gori and Friberg [7,8], Ellis and Dogariu [9] became generalization of the above directions. This, predominantly theoretical, direction of coherent optics is based on using the "two-point" parameters for description of correlation interrelations between phase shifts and polarization-singular states of various points in laser fields.…”
