AB STRACTThis prin ci ple fo cus of this study is the ab so lute ra dio met ric cal i bra tions of FORMOSAT-2 RSI im ag ery in or bit. There are two prin ci pal parts for achiev ing this cal i bra tion. The first is the as sess ment of the cal i bra tion site by ex am in ing at mo spheric ob ser va tions from ground sta tions and field mea sure ments via ground-based ra dio met ric in stru ments. Af ter care ful con sid er ation based on the es sen tial re quire ments for a suit able cal i bra tion site i.e., pre vail ing clear and clean at mo sphere con di tions over a wide, flat and near lambertian sur face with high reflectance, the air port on Dongsha Is land was con sid ered to be an suit able site. The next phase is to de sign a scheme for the field cam paign at the cal i bra tion site for ra dio met ric cal i bra tion. Thus a syn chro nous ex per i ment ac quir ing si mul ta neous mea sure ments from the FORMOSAT-2 Re mote Sens ing In stru ment (RSI) sen sor and ground-based in stru ments was pro posed and im ple mented for the pe riod 16 to 19 Sep tem ber 2004. Its high spa tial res o lu tion Re mote Sens ing In stru ment (RSI) is one of the key on-board com po nents. The RSI is a pushbroom scan ning type sen sor with spectral bands in the vis i ble and near in fra red, in clud ing panchro matic and four multi-spec tral bands (Pan: 520 -820 nm; Band 1 : 450 -520 nm; Band 2 : 520 -600 nm; Band 3 : 630 -690 nm; Band 4 : 790 -900 nm) equipped with 2-and 8-m spa tial res o lu tion, re spec tively. The de tec tors are aligned in a cross-track di rec tion with a wide field of view over a 24-km swath width. Abstract-POLDER is a CNES instrument on board NASDA's ADEOS polar orbiting satellite, which was successfully launched in August 1996. On October 30, 1996, POLDER entered its nominal acquisition phase and worked perfectly until ADEOS's early end of service on June 30, 1997. POLDER is a multispectral imaging radiometer/polarimeter designed to collect global and repetitive observations of the solar radiation reflected by the earth/atmosphere system, with a wide field of view (2400 km) and a moderate geometric resolution (6 km). The instrument concept is based on telecentric optics, on a rotating wheel carrying 15 spectral filters and polarizers, and on a bidimensional charge coupled device (CCD) detector array. In addition to the classical measurement and mapping characteristics of a narrow-band imaging radiometer, POLDER has a unique ability to measure polarized reflectances using three polarizers (for three of its eight spectral bands, 443 to 910 nm) and to observe target reflectances from 13 different viewing directions during a single satellite pass.One of POLDER's original features is that its in-flight radiometric calibration does not rely on any on-board device. Many calibration methods using well-characterized calibration targets have been developed to achieve a very high calibration accuracy. This paper presents the various methods implemented in the in-flight calibration plan and the results obtained during the instrument calibration phase: absolute calibration over molecular scattering, interband calibration over sunglint and clouds, multiangular calibration over deserts and clouds, intercalibration with Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS), and water vapor channels calibration over sunglint using meteorological analysis. A brief description of the algorithm and of the performances of each method is given.

A Geographical Information System based methodology was developed in the framework of global survey of tropical vegetation using satellite data; it was tested on the forests of Sumatra with time series of NOAA AVHRR GAC and LAC data of 1982, 1988 and 1989. After some geometrical registration and radiometric optimization, these data are processed through a mono-date approach for minimizing the strong and highly variable atmospheric effects. Final results are derived from superimposing single-date classification outputs. Due to the low resolution of satellite data and the small size of local systems, adequate reliability for sampling and classification processes require the introduction of geographical information (topography, soils, bio-clirnates); iterative interactive procedures are used for that approach. Elevation is especially useful due to the altitudinal zonation of natural vegetation. Different classification rules based on satellite and geographical information are tested and compared for assessing the potential of NOAA AVHRR data for small-scale survey of tropical forests. Finally, the vegetation maps of Sumatra in 1982and 1988 are obtained, and the on going deforestation rate is estimated.
