Degradation of some phenols and hydroxybenzoates by the imperfect ascomycetous yeastsCandida parapsilosis andArxula adeninivorans: evidence for an operative gentisate pathway

Abstract: The imperfect ascomycetous yeasts Candida parapsilosis and Arxula adeninivorans degraded 3-hydroxybenzoic acid via gentisate which was the cleavage substrate. 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid was metabolized via protocatechuate. No cleavage enzyme for the latter was detected. In stead of this NADH- and NADPH-dependent monooxygenases were present. In cells grown at the expense of hydroquinone and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, enzymes of the hydroxyhydroquinone variant of the 3-oxoadipate pathway were demonstrated, which also too… Show more

“…However, it grows on several hydroxy derivatives of benzene and benzoate such as 3-hydroxybenzoate, 4-hydroxybenzoate, gentisate, hydroquinone, protocatechuate, resorcinate and resorcinol (Middelhoven, 1993;Middelhoven et al, 1992). Catabolism of these compounds proceeds either via a HHQ variant of the 3-oxoadipate pathway or a GSH variant of the gentisate pathway (Fig.…”

“…Blastobotrys adeninivorans; Kurtzmann and Robnett, 2007). This species belongs among the non-conventional, nonpathogenic yeasts that have unusual biochemical features (Middelhoven et al, 1984(Middelhoven et al, , 1991(Middelhoven et al, , 1992Gienow et al, 1990;Van der Walt et al, 1990). It is able to assimilate and utilize a very broad range of substrates, including tannic acid, purines, starch and phytic acid, as energy and carbon sources (Middelhoven et al, 1984(Middelhoven et al, , 1991(Middelhoven et al, , 1992Gienow et al, 1990;Van der Walt et al, 1990;Wartmann et al, 1995b).…”

“…The ascomycetous yeast Candida parapsilosis CBS604 does not accept phenol as sole source of carbon and energy [26]. However, this yeast can utilize a limited number of aromatic compounds, including 3-hydroxybenzoate, 4-hydroxybenzoate, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoate (resorcinate), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate (gentisate), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate (protocatechuate), 1,3-dihydroxybenzene (resorcinol) and 1,4-dihydroxybenzene (hydroquinone) [27].…”
