Degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons by embedding immobilized crude oil degrading bacteria

Abstract: In this study, the removal effect of free and immobilized bacteria on crude oil was determined. Sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol were used as embedding agent, and ramie was modified as an adsorbent to immobilize free bacteria. The conditions of immobilized pellets were optimized using the Response Surface Method, and the best combination was simulated and obtained by Design-Expert 8.0. The best degradation rate of immobilized bacteria was 75.52%. The degradation of free bacteria and immobilized bacteria s… Show more

“…Approximately 3 mL quartz cuvettes were used to hold a series of petroleum-CH 2 Cl 2 standard solutions. Both oils and oil products do have certain characteristic absorbances in the UV range [39,40], and there have been many reports using ultraviolet spectrophotometry to determine the content of petroleum [16,[40][41][42]. The UV-visible spectrophotometer (MAPADA UV-1200 spectrophotometer, Shanghai Mapada Instruments Co. Ltd., Shanghai, China) was used to detect the absorbance of each quartz cuvette with the petroleum-CH 2 Cl 2 standard solution.…”

“…A popular material is PVA-SA (Polyvinyl Alcohol-Sodium Alginate), which is cost-effective and has high mechanical strength [30]. The use of PVA-SA to immobilize Bacillus cereus MRR2 removed 90.1% phosphate, 95.6% magnesium, and 95.7% ammonium ions [31], removing 75.52% of petroleum hydrocarbons [32]. In addition, PVA-SA can be used in combination with other materials, such as PVA-SA combined with biochar to establish a strain N80 immobilization system that degraded 89.37% TSM within 48 h [33].…”
