Degradation of perfluoropolyether lubricants on magnetic recording disks during sliding

Abstract: Degradation of perfluoropolyether lubricants (Fomblin Z-Dol and Fomblin AM 2001) on the magnetic recording thin-films disks are studied during sliding with an Al 2 O 3 ±TiC slider under high vacuum. Gaseous products generated from the head=disk interfaces are detected and monitored as a function of sliding distance using a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Effects of overcoats and surface roughnesses of disks on degradation of lubricants and coefficient of friction were also studied. Experimental results show that… Show more

“…The tribotester features a mass spectrometer with its ionization chamber located in the line of sight of the slider-disk interface so that emission from the interface can be monitored in situ during the sliding under high vacuum. A detailed description and an overall schematic diagram of this apparatus can be found in references [8] and [25]. In order to examine the effects of UV irradiation on the PFPE lubricants, a low-energy UV lamp was installed in the vacuum chamber and over the slider-disk interface at a distance of about 50 mm.…”

“…The sliding experiments were carried out in a high-vacuum environmental tribometer [10,11]. It features a mass spectrometer with its ionization chamber located in the line of sight of the slider±disk interface so that emission from the interface can be monitored in situ during sliding under the high vacuum.…”
