Degradation of Organic Pollutants in Wastewater by Bicarbonate-Activated Hydrogen Peroxide with a Supported Cobalt Catalyst

Abstract: Developing novel technologies to cleanup wastewater has attracted attention for a long while in academic and industrial communities not only for environmental issues but also for recycling water sources. This work demonstrates that bicarbonate-activated H2O2 can be applied as a novel oxidant source in pollutant degradation. Using a supported cobalt catalyst, bicarbonate-activated H2O2 can efficiently degrade various dyes and phenol at ambient temperature. Because the reaction media remains weakly basic during … Show more

“…Tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) [47] or iodide (I − ) [48] can scavenge any ·OH formed in solution or surface bound. In this study, neither TBA nor I − affected degradation of BZA, indicating that ·OH was not the dominated ROS in the solution or bound on the surface of catalyst in this Fenton-like reaction ( Fig.…”

“…In fixed bed experiments the degradation of dye model compound MB (methylene blue) was carried out in continuous feeding double jacket glass reactor that was described in our previous work [17,18]. A total of 20 g of CoMgAl-Na-Y (2.10% cobalt) was loaded in the reactor.…”

“…Recently bicarbonate activation of hydrogen peroxide (BAP) is reported for various organic pollutants and dyes directly with redox metals [14][15][16], even these practices clearly caused heavy metal pollution. Alternately, bicarbonate activation of hydrogen peroxide with heterogeneous catalyst will be a good choice for degradation of pollutants and our last two publications encouraged us to develop this efficient, durable, and stable treatment system for wastewater with no leaching of catalyst [17,18].…”

“…Amongst tertiary treatment processes, advance oxidation processes gained much importance for its high removal efficiency than conventional methods. Fenton oxidation process was found to be most prominent and practicable methods for the treatment of various industrial wastewaters [6]. The main drawback on the practical use of Fenton process was the formation of ferric hydroxide precipitate and acidic conditions for the hydroxyl generation during the organic destruction [7].…”
