Degradation of fluoranthene, pyrene, benz[ a ]anthracene and dibenz[ a , h ]anthracene by Burkholderia cepacia

Abstract: Microbiological analysis of soils from a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)‐contaminated site resulted in the enrichment of five microbial communities capable of utilizing pyrene as a sole carbon and energy source. Communities 4 and 5 rapidly degraded a number of different PAH compounds. Three pure cultures were isolated from community 5 using a spray plate method with pyrene as the sole carbon source. The cultures were identified as strains of Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) cepacia on the basis of biochemical … Show more

“…Many different bacterial genera previously isolated from PAH-contaminated sites belong to Sphingomonas (Pinyakong et al, 2000), Paracoccus (Teng et al, 2010), Mycobacterium (Luo, 2008), Comamonas (Goyal and Zylstra, 1996), Pseudomonas (Jacques et al, 2005;Santos et al, 2008), Burkholderia (Juhasz et al, 1997), Janibacter (Zhang et al, 2009), and Sphingobium (Cunliffe and Kertesz, 2006). Enrichment of PAH-degraders is a common phenomenon during the course of PAH biodegradation (Guo et al, 1997;Piskonen et al, 2005).…”

“…5-rings). For example Juhasz et al (1997) showed a visible increase of dibenz [ah]anthracene and benzo [a]anthracene mineralization in the presence of fluoranthene. Some earlier studies (Oleszczuk and Baran, 2003b) showed also a limitation of the 5-rings PAH mineralization in the case of the quicker degradation of 3-and 4-rings compounds.…”

“…Also, microbes derive energy necessary to degrade contaminants from the catabolic degradation of contaminants themselves. Because of all these properties, microbes are used in situ to minimize disturbance of the pollutants from contaminated site (Juhasz et al, 1997 (Bisht et al, 2010). When a suitable rhizospheric strain is introduced together with a suitable plant, it settles on the root along with indigenous population, thereby enhancing the bioremediation process.…”
