Degradation of carbamazepine and toxicity evaluation using the UV/persulfate process in aqueous solution

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Using persulfate in an advanced oxidation process to degrade organic pollutants has gained more attention in recent years. In this study, an ultraviolet activated persulfate oxidation process used to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) in aqueous solution was investigated. The effect of persulfate dosage, pH, inorganic anions and humic acid on the degradation of CBZ was determined. In addition, the transformation intermediates produced during the process were identified using gas chromatograph-mass spectro… Show more

“…At pH 7, TOC removal was 21.0 and 33.3 % for PS-Fe(II) and PMS-Fe(II), respectively. Most of the SR-AOP studies reported that the degradation of organic pollutants achieved it highest efficiency at acidic conditions due to the formation of SR through acid-catalysis reaction (Zhang et al 2015). For this study, it was proposed that Fe(II) complexed with soluble organic substances in the vinasse at neutral condition.…”

“…Advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radical generation have proved to be effective in degrading a wide range of recalcitrant micro contaminants in aqueous solutions, including hormones [19], pharmaceuticals [1,20], herbicides [12] and the decontamination of pool water [21].…”
