This study provides an overview on green composites degradability. Practically, the main drawbacks of using natural fibers are their poor dimensional stability, degradability and high degree of moisture absorption. While, end use of product from natural fiber filled or reinforced composites has become subject of concern to material engineers and scientist. The major properties of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites are greatly dependent on the hydrophilic tendency and dimensional stability of the fibers used, morphology aspect ratio for long fiber, while voids for powder fibers. The effects of chemical treatments on cellulosic fibers that are used as reinforcements for thermoplastics were studied. The chemical source for the treatments is alkalization. The significance of chemically-treated natural fibers is seen through the improvement of mechanical properties. The untreated fiber composites degrade faster in municipal soil compared to treated fiber composites.

The stability of polymers with C—C and stable C—heteroatom backbones against chemicals, hydrolysis, temperature, light, and microbes has challenged society with the problem of accumulation of plastic waste and its management worldwide. Given careless disposal of plastic waste, large amounts of plastic litter accumulate in the environment and disintegrate into microplastics. One of the questions frequently raised in the recent times is if so‐called biodegradable polymers can substitute conventional polymers for several applications and help to tackle this challenge. The answer is not so simple as biodegradability is a certified property occurring only under certain environmental conditions and therefore requires systematic study. As a first step, this study focusses on comparative degradation studies of six polymers (five taken from the so‐called biodegradable polyesters, including poly(lactic‐ co ‐glycolic acid) (PLGA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA), poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), Ecoflex, and one well‐known non‐degradable polymer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in artificial seawater and freshwater under controlled conditions for 1 year. Only amorphous PLGA shows 100% degradation as determined by weight loss, change in molar mass with time, NMR, electron microscopy, and high‐performance liquid chromatography. This is a step forward in understanding the degradability of polyesters required for the design of environmentally friendly novel polymers for future use.

Una manera de resolver el problema del acumulamiento de plásticos, es la producción de materiales poliméricos biodegradables. En este trabajo se presenta la preparación y pruebas de degradación acelerada de películas preparadas a partir de mezclas de polietileno lineal de baja densidad con quitosano, utilizando anhídrido maléico como compatibilizante. Las películas de polietileno con un 15 % de quitosano perdieron 40 % del valor inicial de resistencia a la tensión después de 360 h de degradación acelerada. En contraste con el 20 % de pérdida que presentó la película de polietileno puro durante el mismo periodo. Las películas con quitosano, además, redujeron 13 % de su peso después de estar bajo tierra de vivero durante 180 días, un valor considerablemente mayor que el 0.05 % que presentó la película de polietileno.
