PurposeThis study theoretically investigates the extant literature published about circular economy and sustainable development to identify significant research themes, the most relevant authors, countries and journals.Design/methodology/approachBibliometric analysis is used, followed by cluster formation using co-citation analysis. The clusters are discussed in-depth to identify emerging themes and future research areas.FindingsBy systematically reviewing 596 research articles, significant themes of research in this field were found. These include frameworks and indicators to define and assess the circular economy, circular business models and use cases, global and industrial contexts of application of circular economy and different dimensions of the circular economy.Research limitations/implicationsPublications from only one database have been used. Only articles published in relevant academic journals have been used for the bibliometric analysis. For co-citation analysis and cluster formation, only articles with a high number of citations were selected.Originality/valueThe analysis of the various clusters revealed research areas that can be explored in future research to understand the circular economy better and implement its practices to attain sustainability.

Globalization has propelled economic development for decades, but this trend seems to be broken, potentially entering a reversal trend of de-globalization, as recent indicators allegedly reveal. Owing to the complexity and novelty of this trend, the literature leads to ambiguous assessments of economic de-globalization and its implications. Therefore, this literature review, drawn from international business literature, attempts to outline the drivers of economic de-globalization and understand how these drivers affect the de-internationalization of cross-border investments by multinational enterprises. Thus, this review provides a terminological basis by distinguishing between de-globalization as an external macro driver and de-internationalization as an internal corporate response. The interdependent de-globalization drivers are social inequality, technological advancement, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, (inter-) national politics play an outstanding role in understanding the development of de-globalization. This study structures the literature on de-globalization and finds that the impact of de-globalization drivers on multinational enterprises varies considerably. As the topic of de-globalization is rather new and conceptually elaborated, many research opportunities exist in this field.

How Does Deglobalization Affect Economic Growth?

The current global landscape has been marked by a series of factors, such as the US-China trade war, disintegration in the European Union (EU), the refugee crisis, and the pandemic, which have impeded the process of globalization. However, similar situations have been experienced in the past, such as colonization, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. The world has experienced periods of globalization (Globalization I, II, and III) as well as periods of deglobalization (Deglobalization I and II). There have been discussions about whether the current decade is experiencing deglobalization and its effects. In this context, the present study aims to investigate the effects of deglobalization on economic growth in 34 OECD countries during the period 2000-2019, in various dimensions. Using panel data analysis, the results indicate that trade and social deglobalization have a negative impact on economic growth, while financial deglobalization and the subdimensions of social deglobalization have a positive influence on growth. Additionally, the study reveals that political globalization is not significantly associated with economic growth. These findings contribute to the ongoing debate on the current state of globalization and its effects on economic development.
